24-105mm lenses

A patent for a Sigma 24-105mm f/2.8-4 DG OS HSM has come to light.

  • Publication date: 2015.3.23
  • Filing date: 2013.9.13
  • Focal length: 24.85mm-101.49mm
  • Angle of view: 83.87°-23.38°
  • F-number: 2.83-4.13
  • Lens construction: 17 elements in 13 groups
  • Special glass: 1 FLD, 4 ELD
  • Features: Optical Stabilization, internal focus

A 24-120mm f/4 and the current 24-105mm f/4 also appear in the list of possible options.

A 24-105mm f/2.8-4 DG lens would make sense as a full-frame “equivalent” to the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC, but since Sigma has chosen the fixed f/4 route for their slow standard FF zoom (and with a new 24-70mm f/2.8 DG on the way), I don’t think there’s room for such a lens. It’s interesting to see what Sigma considered in this segment though.

  • This would make sense as their “unique lens nobody else does”. It’s a DG version of the 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC. I’m hoping they’re putting the 24-70 f/2.8 first, though. Releasing a GlobalVision version of that should be a higher priority IMHO despite the fact I shoot crop frame so am not really interested in it.

Wonder if Sigma wants to replace the old 24-105 f4 with this one? It’d be a walk-around lens.

i find it unnecessary to come up with 2.8-4. what sigma needs to do is lower the price of this lens and stay competitive

As a new 24-70 2.8 DG is on it’s way already, I don’t see room for a 24-105 2.8-4.0 DG as well. A 24-135 (or even 150) 2.8-4.0 DG on the other side could be interesting.
The jump from my 17-50 EX to the 17-70 2.8-4.0 “C” is just not big
enough for me to consider it, especially as it doesn’t have a constant
lens speed (even if I would love a few millimeters more on the longer

    TLDR: I would propose a 17-55 DC / 24-70 DG with constant 2.8 and a 17-85 DC / 24-135 DG with 2.8-4.0 and skip the zooms between

I wonder how much difference will be between this and the old F4 model.

Who knows the range of focus length among 2.8-3.2-3.5-4.0?

    • Krokodeilos

      24mm – 30/35 = 2.8

      30/35mm – 45-50 = 3.2
      45/50mm – 70/80mm = 3.5
      70/80mm – 105mm = 4

      • Kirby Zhou

I seem not attractive, If the whole range can be extended to 24-120, and 24mm-50mm = 2.8 50-75=3.2, it should be very good
