Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F

The Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is now in stock at B&H Photo.

Our friends at lensrentals.com posted a great report on the MTF Curves and Sample Variation of this lens. In summary, here are their thoughts:

Looking at the results of the Sigma zoom now that we have tested a number of copies, it’s very obvious Sigma has done it again. They’ve broken new ground and made a zoom that is a full stop wider than other zooms, yet is optically on a par with similar aperture prime lenses. And they’ve maintained excellent copy-to-copy consistency while doing it. Superbly done, yet again, Sigma.

This could be one of Sigma’s long-rumored super telephoto primes, to be announced shortly before Photokina in September.

No focal length or aperture was mentioned, but the source indicates that Sigma wanted to go longer and brighter than Canon and Nikon while keeping the size and weight of the lens at reasonable levels, presumably using the new Thermally Stable Composite material. Judging from the picture, it seems they have succeeded. Moreover, the lens should feature Optical Stabilization for easier handheld shooting.

The Sigma dp Quattro cameras inherit only very few stuff from the DP Merrills, but some doubt remained about their lenses: redesigned or not? When checking their characteristics, it seemed they were the same.

As reported by Macotakara, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki told more about it at CP+. The Sigma dp1 Quattro is the only one to be equipped with a newly designed lens.

Sigma dp Quattro Presentation by Kazuto Yamaki at CP+

It’s good news and not surprising, since although the 19mm f/2.8 lens from the DP1 Merrill is good per se, it is technically the weakest of all three DP Merrills: less sharp at close range and exhibiting some lateral chromatic aberration. The DP2 Merrill and DP3 Merrill have optically superb lenses.

Sigma’s website is stating “improved optics” in the dedicated page of the Sigma dp2 Quattro – a mention we should probably disregard now.

The Sigma dp Quattro cameras catched most of the attention at their CP+ booth, but one of Sigma’s most anticipated lenses also had a generous display. This lens is of course the 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM from the Art series, announced at CES in January. So what can be said about it now?

Expected availability

April 2014 in Canon mount first. The others will follow. Source: Sigma. Click for larger:

Sigma about the 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Expected price

→ Spotted at around $1,345 (estimate), but a somewhat lower price is my guess.

UPDATE: Sigma France debunked this supposed price on the Facebook page of the website Pixelistes.com.

Weight

815 g / 28.7 oz.

Sigma added the weight of the lens a few days ago on their global website.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art is comparatively heavy, which in conjunction with the number of elements is a strong hint that we’re dealing with a highly corrected lens.

It is not much lighter than the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 (with the Canon version weighing in at 1,030 g / 36.3 oz. and the Nikon version at 970 g / 34.2 oz.), but significantly heavier than any other ~50mm f/1.4 lens. The recent Nikon 58mm f/1.4 is only 385 g / 13.6 oz. – different design goals here.

Unfortunately, there are no full-size sample images to scrutinize as of yet.
