We have received an email, updating our previous post about the rumor of Canon trying to acquire Sigma. The email states:

Canon’s fourth and final offer to buy Sigma was rejected by Sigma CEO and acquisition talks have ended. Instead, the two companies are now in talks to share some technology.

So for those of you who do not agree with the idea of the companies merging, this is good news for you. Although Canon was unsuccessful in their hopes of acquiring Sigma, it might be interesting to see how the two companies will cooperate in the future.

canon sigma acquisiton rumorWe have received an email, just as many other people have in our industry, stating that Canon may be trying to acquire Sigma for themselves. The email states:

Canon wants to acquire Sigma, but Sigma has already rejected Canon’s first offer which was at 7x Sigma’s net value. Canon hit again with a second offer of unknown value and there are intense talks between the two companies.

We are not able to confirm this rumor at this time. We believe it may be spam, but we will let you know if we find out otherwise.

Sigma rumors for 2015 and 2016

A couple of things regarding Sigma’s lens roadmap have come to my ears (thanks).

  • “No rush to get the 24-70mm out”. The 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art may be released after Canon’s own stabilized 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The Sigma will do more harm to the Canon if it comes out after it. Also, the new 24-70mm is expected to hit the already not-so-good sales of the 24-105mm quite a bit, so Sigma is willing to leave a bit of room for this lens for a couple more months.
  • “70-200mm f/2.8 OS Art? Forget it”. I’m told that Sigma will rather stick to fast primes in this range — at least in a close future. It means a 85, a 135, and perhaps a 200mm. All less expensive than the Canon and Nikon competitors.
  • The rumored APS-C zoom lens is still planned.
  • “Maximum 1 more focal length this year to come. No word on how many lenses that will be though…”. This may be hinting at a recent rumor about 12-24mm DG Contemporary and Art siblings. However, there’s no indication of a focal length range, but only a single FL.
  • Sigma knows that its lenses work well on the Sony A7 series of mirrorless cameras with the Metabones adapter, and ponders whether it would be a good thing to let people know “officially” about it, and to promote using lenses with a third-party adapter.

This source nailed it with the announcement of the 24mm f/1.4 Art, so they may be onto something here as well. Still, take everything with a pinch of salt!

Sigma lenses

Once again, it is floating around that a 85mm f/1.4 Art is to be announced in 2015, and released in 2016. An ultra wide-angle zoom lens is also mentioned.

Since that 85mm f/1.4 Art is arguably the most requested Sigma lens, differentiating wishful thinking from real bits of info is the tough part — but we indeed expect another announcement this year.

Common sense would tend to something that doesn’t exist in the Sigma lineup, like a 135mm f/2. Sigma is quite proud of the recent 85mm f/1.4 EX and without a doubt updating it so quickly was not in the plans, but the demand has been too high to ignore it.
