Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art on Canon EOS 5Ds R (simulated)

As of mid-2015, there’s no better lens testing platform than the EOS 5DS R. Just published, both on the 50MP Canon camera:

  • Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art sample photos at DPReview here. 45 full-size shots, most wide open.
  • Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art review at Photozone here. Excellent sharpness in central areas, but the lens struggles elsewhere at wide apertures, which is not terribly surprising. At least the performance is assessed in the proper context.

While the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A is certainly not a bad lens, it is still the weakest prime of the Art series that we have tested so far. To be fair – an ultra-large aperture 24mm lens is simply more difficult to design than a 35mm or 50mm lens. This also applies to the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L II. While we have tested the Canon on 20mp only so far, it already struggled with the image corners at large apertures here so it’s very unlikely to be better on the EOS 5Ds R. Thus if you struggle to decide between the two, we’d actually recommend to have a closer look at the Sigma.

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art on Canon EOS 5DS R (simulated)

Photography Blog has posted a bunch of sample photos made with the Sigma 24mm, 35mm and 50mm f/1.4 Art lenses on a production Canon EOS 5Ds 50MP DSLR. Among the 113 shots are 20 RAW (.CR2) images taken at various apertures and distances.

This is the toughest test these lenses can undergo as of mid-2015. Of course Sigma doesn’t seem to be worried by the challenge…

DPR: Are you confident that your Art-series primes can resolve enough detail on the new Canon 50MP sensors?
Kazuto Yamaki: I think so – of course it depends on the aperture value, but we believe that our new 24mm F1.4 is the best lens of this focal length on the market. So if it isn’t usable on the new Canon cameras, there isn’t another 24mm lens which is. We believe that our new 24mm F1.4 is the best lens of this focal length on the market. Sigma weather sealing test

Sigma weather sealing test. Image credit: Rob Chaney

  • Beautiful images of snow monkeys and red-crowned cranes by Sigma photographer Robert O’Toole, using the 150-600mm Sports lens & Nikon D810 combination.
  • Rob Chaney’s unusual weather-sealing test with the Sigma SD1 Merrill and 150-600mm Sports lens can be best described as refreshing. More about weather sealing in Sigma lenses.
  • The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art may not be the dream wide-angle lens for coma-free images, but this wide-angle lens shootout helps put things into perspective. In addition to an extensive coma testing, it provides useful insights into night sky shooting.
  • Wide-angle lenses should claim no monopoly on this type of photography. Here comes Jupiter seen through the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary.
  • The rarely seen Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 is SR reader Mike D’s tool for surf photography. Quoting Mike:

The waves were small so my keep rate was extremely low. I needed a lot of mm to get in close – no TC. The images have been post processed. I bought my 300-800 (original version) in 2004 and it is still one of my sharpest lenses on both my D7200 and D810.
