Sigma lens rumors for 2015

Let’s review what Sigma could come up with next. A lens marked in blue means that we may see it announced in a close future (say Q1 2015). Please don’t take anything for granted though!

As a reminder, Sigma won’t exhibit at CES (January 6-9), which is not to say they won’t announce anything in January. CP+ will follow shortly after anyway.

Rumored lenses

  • 24mm f/1.4 DG (I don’t rule out the possibility of seeing an f/1.8 wide-angle prime lens, but it’s not rumored)
  • 85mm f/1.4 DG (more on it below)
  • 135mm f/1.8 or f/2 DG (hopefully this lens is ready; Samyang is probably about to introduce their own)
  • 12-24mm f/2.8 DC (or similar, but that specific one corresponds to a patent and fits the rumor)
  • 14-24mm f/4 DG OS (makes sense, but the initial rumor came with a price, making it dubious)
  • 16-20mm f/2 DG (questionable, the range is very short)
  • 24-70mm f/2 DG (forget it)
  • 300-600mm f/? (fixed aperture) DG OS (probably not in a close future)
  • DN lenses (a zoom and a fast prime like a 25mm f/1.4? The Sony A7 line won’t be served for now, but Fuji’s X series may be)

Other possible lenses

No new Art lens
To the disappointment of many, the much anticipated 24mm f/1.4 Art and 85mm f/1.4 Art did not see the light of day, neither did the 14-24mm f/4 DG OS HSM that came out of nowhere a few weeks ago.

Sigma took a different path and filled the two other Global Vision categories. Before Photokina 2014, the Contemporary and Sports lines contained 2 lenses and 1 lens, respectively, versus 8 in the Art division (counting the 3 designs for mirrorless cameras).

Also, the Contemporary line lacked a long telephoto zoom lens to challenge the Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3, and for two years the only Sports lens has been the pro-oriented 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM (introduced back in September 2012, at the previous Photokina) and it was not even a new optical design. So what we are seeing is not really a surprise either.

A note on the origin of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art rumor. Someone at Sigma allegedly said that it would be the next Art prime lens release. That was in May, and no Art lens has been released since then. If this happens to be true, it should not be long before we see this lens.

What lens(es) would you like to see next from Sigma?

That’s probably what most of you are wondering after review of the various announcements below.

As a reminder, here are the three rumored Art lenses:

We thought that there was a really good chance to see at least one of the primes.

So where are we at now?

Otus 85/1.4

In the previous posts, we’ve seen a bit of what Sigma will be introducing at Photokina. The appearance of at least one new Art prime lens is also expected.

The above lens, newly announced, is another good reason for Sigma to throw a fresh 85mm f/1.4 lens in the arena. It’s not only for the ‘Look, we have a high-performance 85mm AF lens that’s four times less expensive’, but also to be competitive in a crowded market, and offer what users want. Sigma has a 85mm f/1.4, but pre-Global Vision lenses don’t have the same appeal as the latest designs on all aspects.

As I write this, the best we can say is: there is high probability to see a 85mm f/1.4 Art and/or a 24mm f/1.4 Art in the coming days.

The world's leading imaging fair

Photokina is about one month away, but getting more than rumors is still difficult. It seems that Sigma executives will keep things secret until they need to be more widely disclosed internally.

On the camera front, with the Quattro sensor not yet utilized to its full potential, and the new line of dp cameras only partially released, my perspective is that it’s not the right time to announce the sd1 Quattro. Sigma will probably focus on the dp1 Quattro and dp3 Quattro, which have not been introduced to the Western audience. Let’s hope for a release date.

As for DSLR lenses, what nearly hits 100% certainty is:
